What is the purpose of life

What's the purpose of our lives. This is something that we think seldom than we should. Is the purpose of life to make money. Is it love. Is it fame. Is it about helping others. Is it a combination of all of these. Is it none of these.

When we are young we are moulded in our parents ambition. They want us to be hugely successful, educated, and have a career. As children we imbibe these vibes and embed in our hearts as the purposes in our lives. As we grow up and see this kind of a pattern repeating in successful people we cement in our hearts that this is the purpose of our life.

Then comesour youth where our hormones, hollywood and bollywood comes in and changes the equations a bit. It brings in love to the scheme of things. Finding love and falling in love suddenly seems all the more important purpose of our life. And once we leave our teenage years, and step into adulthood, suddenly, career takes over. We want to excel in our careers, gain knowledge, be rich, powerful and famous.

If you think about it, there has been no purpose in our lives. The so called purpose has just been the needs of our body and mind. We conveniently call them as "Goals" in our lives and follow them passionately. When we achieve them and we are happy for a while and then we set new goals and the cycle continues.

But, is there a purpose for a human life. A purpose that this magical and wonderful world had in mind when it created us. Did we come over here with a purpose to do something. Logically, someone would not create a miraculous world called earth and life just for us to come over here and struggle throughout our lives, without making any impact whatsoever and die.
There can be two ways to be looking at this. One is through the eyes of a religious person. If you are a ardent religious follower your view of this life might be as a entrance examination to heaven. There is little room for ambiguity here. You have come down here to live with limited resources, hardships to refine your character, abilities to help others. Now what you do with it qualifies you for a seat with the almighty.

The other angle is through the eyes of a evolutionist. Now if nature has evolved you with super computer like brain, it expects you to help itself in the next step for life. The most important and the only goal of evolution has been the survival of life. For life to survive it has to spread to as wider region as possible. It has been able to spread it almost all across the world. What is the final frontier left. Life Outside earth. That could be a purpose of human life, to spread life outside our earth. I do not know if we have the ability to do it. We might be one step in the evolution process towards that goal. But I am sure whoever makes that step, it is going to be the same reason that made fishes came out of oceans or why the reptiles left the ground and started flying. The desperation, or the inability to continue in the current environment was what might have forced the early ones to take that step into uncertainty. Humans certainly would not be into that kind of a desperate state for centuries to come. But when the time comes, will we be ready to make the move. Will we be evolved enough to survive the uncertain and unknown world outside our mother planet. Because if we don't what would happen to us is what happened to all those animals that are not with us anymore. Yes we will get extinct.

As kids we start running behind things that make us happy. When we were younger we knew what would make us happy. It was small things like a ice cream, or a candy bar or a bicycle. As we grew up the things we want became bigger. And after a certain point of time we never knew what would make us happy. Some think a lot of money would make them happy, some run behind their career, some just run around everything. We buy a illusion of happiness sold by our friend, family member or someone we know. We try to run behind that illusion and assume that we would be happy once we get it.

As the american constitution rightly puts we are all in "pursuit of happiness". We always measure our happiness by amount of something that we gain. Be it recognition, money, wealth, accolades it is always something that comes in. When would we learn to be just happy for ourselves. Just be happy for this very moment we have. Just to enjoy the fact that we are alive and we are part of a miracle called life. It takes vision and strong judgement to come out of human emotions to go behind things that matters.

We spend a lot of time to learn about technologies, trends, stocks, buisinesses, daily news. It never occurs to us that we do not know what we are. The puzzle is right infront of us and we never enquire about it. Would there be a more happier event in our lives than to know what we are. How did we originate, what are we supposed to do.

In ancient times philosophers and sages did ponder about it a lot. But now it seems like humanity has given up that search. We are ready to take the ride where it goes. We comfortably take the option that we were created by god and he is taking care of us. Not a bad hypothesis untill we discover the truth.

I as a person would consider this life lived to the full on the day I discover the answer the question "who i am". Becuase that is the day I would know that a billion dollars is not going to make me happy. Some people struggle all their youth and become millionaires in search of happiness. Then they give away all that money and go in search of happiness. It is upto you which path you would like to take.

Be happy and make money. Or just make money and never be happy.

Let us cherish life

Humanity has invented a lot of time saving devices. Automobiles were invented for saving time for transportation. Mobile phones and internet was invented for saving time spent on communication. Machines were been invented for saving time and effort in physical labour. Over the past century a million things have been invented for saving time, effort and labour of human kind. But when you compare the lifestyle of people who lived a century back and now, one wonders if these inventions have saved any time at all. Humans are getting more and more busy every day. They have less or no time for spending with the family and kids.
After a hectic day of work as a software developer at a reputable MNC as I return back to my house at 8 PM, days of my childhood when my dad used to be back home at exactly 5.30 PM flashes accross my mind. A friend of mine once went back to India and got married in a short span of 2 weeks as he could not get a longer leave. The timelessness in my future is suddenly striking me big time.
At this point of time I am left to wonder if the world did not have any of these devices would it have been more peacefull and less stressful. Would I have had time to gaze at the stars and enjoy a walk in the moonlight instead of checking my mails and browsing meaningless stuff on the internet.
It is also interesting to see the inherent nature of human being to outshine each other. As there exists no natural predator to human being we entertain ourselves by competing against eachother. Those who are not interested in this game or are bad at it are called words such as unsuccesful, loser and sometimes poor. In our mad race to out smart each other we fail to see the fact that the other person is also a fellow human being and we all are not here for long.

The population in 2009 is much much more than what we had in in 1909. We have so many new technologies, machines and time saving devices. Yet we do not have free time. Every man has to work more time to earn for his daily living. It clearly shows that there exists fundamental flaw in the direction humanity is progressing. It simply shows that however sophisticated and useful devices we develop our quality of life would keep degenerating in the future instead of improving.

It is something that we all should think about and take action. As a humanity are we just running around in circles. Are we over complicating things and swimming against the tide which was created by us in the first place. It takes a visionary to see the future and focus on things that are permanent. It takes nobility to be unaffected by public emotion and to take the path that is right. Out of this huge huge universe we are lucky to be at a place where we are self conscious. It is a gift that has been given upon us by nature. With the gift comes the great resposibility to use it for the special purpose it was given to us for. What is that resposibility is yet to be seen or would arise when the universe is in a calamity. It certainly is not to fight over eachother or to exploit all the natural resource of mother earth and make it unsuitable for life. Let us all as brothers and sisters, the inheriters of a great gift called life join our hands and work towards the betterment of life and happiness of everybody.

Let us cherish Life.........
